If you haven’t been reading our blog for long or are just starting to learn about SEO, you probably don’t know the exact reasons why you should be on the first page of Google. You know it is better for your website, but can’t really pin point the reasons as to why.
Well it is your lucky day! Class is in session. And today we are going back to basics! Nothing too difficult or complex will be discussed here. We are simply going to look at why you need SEO to help get you to the first page of Google.
When starting a website, it’s a given – everyone automatically thinks “I want to be on the first page”. But has anyone stopped to think why it is so important to be on the first page of Google? This blog will go over the top reasons you need to be fighting for the number one page! So keep reading to understand why you are working so hard at your SEO.
Before we dive into the specific reasons, it is important to give you some facts about Google and the coveted first page so you understand just how powerful this search engine is. It is important to note that yes, there are other search engines (like Bing and Yahoo!) and they are still important. However, they are nowhere near as powerful as Google.
Important Facts about Google
Every day on Google there are about 3.5 billion searches. This translates to 1.2 trillion searches every year worldwide. Just stop and think about that for a second. That is an astronomical amount of searches. And the trend is showing this is only going to increase in the years to come.
In June 2017, Google’s market share of the search engine market sits at almost 80%. Compare that to Google’s next closest rival, Bing at just 7%. But what does this market dominance mean? Well, it means that when people are looking to find out some information they are probably going to use Google.
Google has become so prevalent in society that the term “Google it” is widely known and commonly accepted.
You are probably thinking, “yeah I know Google is important and powerful, but why do I need to be on the first page? If there are over 3 billion searches every day, then someone is bound to find me, no matter the page I’m on.” Unfortunately, no. Google doesn’t really work like that.
There is another saying you might enjoy: The best place to hide a dead body is on the second page of Google. Search Engine Watch explains that there is only about 5% of total traffic on the second page. Whereas the first page saw about 92% of all traffic from the average search.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that is a considerable drop in traffic. Put in simple words, if you aren’t on the first page you won't be seen by a lot of users. Not only this, but the amount of clicks you are likely to receive increases dramatically dependant on the position you hold on the first page.
This means that you shouldn’t stop your SEO efforts once you reach the first page.
You should continue working hard to ensure you move up the rankings even further. And if you do take the number one position in Google, unfortunately you cannot simply stop your SEO campaign. SEO is constantly changing and evolving, this means that the best practices today may not be the ideal way to preform SEO in a couple of years. On top of this, there are other competitors that will also be working hard to steal the number one position from you.
So you will need to be working just as hard (if not harder) on your SEO to ensure no one takes the top stop from you.
All these statistics cement the fact that Google is all mighty and powerful. Not only this, but there are no signs of Google’s power slowing down soon. You should be doing everything you can to ensure your SEO efforts are focused towards improving your ranking on Google.
Now that you have got a few key statistics under your belt, let’s investigate the top 4 reasons why you need to be on the first page of Google. The facts listed above probably gave some idea of the reasons, but we will be going into greater detail below! Your hard work and solid SEO efforts should be completely justified once you understand the importance of a first page ranking.
1. Increased Visibility
This is an obvious one. If you are on the first page of Google’s search results, more people are going to see your website. More and more people are searching online to find what they are looking for. When people need to find out information they tend to go to Google.
Google users also have the mindset that if it isn’t on the first page it doesn’t exist.
People don’t want to make the effort to click onto the second page. Users understand that Google is pretty good at showcasing the results that they want. So they know that with the keywords they input, there is likely to be a match on what they want on the first page.
Being on the first page is so important, no matter if a user actually clicks on to your website because it means your business is in the front of others. Users trust Google’s opinion and if you are on the first page you are more likely to be seen.
Your visibility will decrease dramatically each page further back you are in the results.
When you are on the first page users don’t have to do anything to find your business. Whereas if you were on the second page, users would have to scroll and click onto the second page. I know this doesn’t seem like much, but users these days are looking for instant results.
You want to be on the first page to ensure your website visibility is as high as possible. While visibility isn’t as important as conversions or sales, it is the first step in the process. You can’t skip out on visibility; if users aren't aware of your business then they don’t understand what great services or products they are missing out on.
2. New Customer Potential
This point is slightly similar to the first. When you are on the first page of Google there is a dramatic increase in visibility. This means there is an increase in the potential of new customers. Yes, returning customers are important. But it is also vital that you continue to grow and expand your business by getting new customers on board.
Being on the first page of Google is a great way to do this.
Think about it this way, if you owned a physical store, would you rather be on a main road where there is a high amount of foot traffic or a small side road where foot traffic is low? You’d rather be on the main road right? Well, being on the first page of Google is like being on the main road.
More people are going to see your business, both returning and new customers. When you see an influx of new customers you then have the potential to turn them into returning customers. Without being on the first page of Google, you may not even be given that opportunity.
The first page of Google is crawling with new potential customers, so make sure you are doing your bit to ensure they have the ability to easily see your business.
3. Increased Traffic
The first two points lead nicely on to this third point. When you have an increase of eyeballs on your search engine listing, there is a higher probability that more users will click and visit your website. This results in an increase of traffic.
When consumers use Google, they tend to be looking for the perfect match, they don’t want to be clicking around to find what they want. Google understands this and therefore when a user searches, the first page is filled with the top 10 results that best match the keywords inputted. Users are kept happy because they will almost always find what they are looking for on the first page.
The reason Google has such a high market share is because users know they will always find what they are looking for, and fast. Users don’t want to click on to the second page of results, so therefore if you are on the first page you are more likely to have users clicking on your website.
Users understand that Google has ranked your website in the top 10 for a reason so they know it must be of high value. Google is all about user experience and doing everything they can to ensure everyone is kept happy and they are always having a positive user experience.
Being on the first page of Google obviously has its advantages in terms of traffic, and being on the second page gives you a huge disadvantage. Not many people go to the second page, so your chances of seeing an increase in traffic are diminished.
I have talked about trust a lot in this blog. Users know and understand how Google works, they have probably been using this search engine for many years. They trust that Google will give them the best results possible.
This trust of Google will translate to trust of your business, especially if you are on the first page. Google is always awesome at providing the most suitable results for users. Users know they will pretty much always find exactly what they want on the first page.
For example, if I were to search “best running shoes 2017” and Google ranked your website as number one. I would trust that the first website would contain information about the best running shoes this year. Not only do users trust Google, but they also rely heavily on the search engine giant to produce the results they need. When on the first page, it is a silent way of having Google’s seal of approval.
Let me put this simply:
People trust Google –> Google approves your website –> People trust you
Users don’t really understand how much time and effort required to hold a position on the first page. And honestly, they probably never will. But what they do know is the trust they have of this search engine. So if Google is saying your website has the “best running shoes 2017” they are probably going to trust it.
You probably always knew that being on the first page of Google was important. But hopefully now you know exactly why! Google is such a powerful search engine. It has a clear dominance on the market and as a result there are millions and millions of searches every day.
When you put in the hard SEO work and finally make it to the first page of Google, you are likely to see a dramatic increase in your visibility. This is to both returning and new potential customers.
The first page of Google tends to have majority of the visibility whereas the second page and beyond see next to nothing.
Leading on from visibility is traffic. The more users that see your website listing, the increase chances they will click on to it. Therefore if you want to increase the traffic to your website, the best way to do so is through getting on to the first page.
Lastly, when your website is in the first page it means that users will trust your website more. Users trust Google to give them the best results on the first page. When you are on the first page, it shows users that Google thinks your website is worth their time.
